Can I build a desktop that matches a laptop’s power efficiency?

I'm looking to build a very power-efficient desktop for an off-grid setup, with a budget of around £2,000 and some flexibility for something exceptional. My main priority is using as few watts from the wall as possible while retaining as much performance as I can. CPU performance comes first, with decent gaming capability being a bonus.

I currently use a Ryzen 9 3900X for very large audio projects, so I need at least comparable CPU performance. I also have an RTX 5060 Ti available. Modern Zephyrus laptops have impressed me because they can run light workloads for many hours, but I would prefer a desktop for better longevity, cooling, and upgradability. I'm also considering using a laptop for general work and keeping a separate system for gaming.

When browsing, my current desktop seems to draw roughly 100 watts from the wall. Can a carefully configured desktop get close to the efficiency of modern laptops, particularly at idle and during light workloads?

It helps to define a power budget and separate idle, light-use, and full-load targets. Low power and maximum performance naturally conflict, so the best build depends on which workloads matter most.

A Ryzen 5 9600X or Ryzen 7 9700X would be a reasonable starting point for a powerful but efficient system. You may also be better off keeping the RTX 5060 Ti rather than replacing it, since changing GPUs could add cost without improving efficiency enough to justify it.

Use a large, quiet air cooler, tune the CPU and GPU voltage, and choose a high-quality Platinum-rated PSU. A PSU is generally most efficient when the system is operating around the middle of its rated capacity. If the goal is genuinely minimal energy use, lowering the gaming target to something like 1080p at 60 fps will have a much larger effect than chasing top-end hardware.

A laptop will usually remain more efficient because its processor and platform are designed around low voltage and low power operation. A desktop can get reasonably close with sensible parts, undervolting, and strict power limits.

A Ryzen 7 9800X3D paired with an efficient GPU such as an RX 9070 can deliver strong performance while keeping combined CPU and GPU gaming consumption around 225–250 watts after tuning, with perhaps a 10–15% performance reduction. The exact result depends on the workload, but undervolting and power limits matter more than simply choosing a low-rated component. For example, a Ryzen 7 7700 is generally much more efficient than a stock 7700X because it uses less voltage and has a lower power limit.

The newest Zephyrus systems seem to use Intel Core Ultra chips and can last around 17 hours during light use. Is there any way to reproduce that kind of very low browsing power on a desktop? My current system is already using roughly 100 watts for basic browsing.

Intel’s low-power desktop variants, such as the Core Ultra 7 265T, are worth considering. They have a 35-watt base power rating and can be nearly as capable as their higher-power counterparts in many workloads, although their maximum performance is reduced.

For an always-on system or a compact build, a low-power CPU, modest graphics card, efficient motherboard, and carefully configured power limits can provide a good performance-per-watt balance. Just remember that the processor’s base power rating is not the same as total wall consumption; motherboard power use, memory, storage, fans, PSU losses, and display output all contribute. Desktop idle power will still usually be higher than a laptop’s because laptops integrate more components and use aggressive sleep and display-saving features.
