I'm dealing with intermittent white flashes and screen flickering while using the Windows 11 desktop. There doesn't seem to be a consistent pattern, and I can't reliably reproduce it. The problem never appears while gaming, and the same monitor and hardware work normally in CachyOS. This is a fresh Windows 11 installation running on a Zotac Solid Core RTX 5080 paired with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Could this be a graphics driver or Windows display feature issue, and what troubleshooting steps should I try?

Because the flickering only happens in Windows and not in CachyOS—and games remain stable—I’d investigate the Windows graphics stack before assuming the GPU is defective. A clean NVIDIA driver removal with DDU followed by a fresh driver installation is a good first step. If it continues, test with G-Sync or VRR disabled, turn off hardware acceleration in apps such as Chrome and Discord, and look into disabling Windows Multi-Plane Overlay (MPO), which can cause desktop flashes on some systems.
I’ve seen similar symptoms where the screen briefly turns white every few minutes and the taskbar occasionally goes completely black. That can still point to a display driver or Windows compositor problem, but it’s worth checking the monitor cable, refresh-rate settings, and another display if a clean driver install doesn’t solve it.
I’d start with driver troubleshooting. Use DDU in Safe Mode to remove the existing display drivers completely, then install the latest NVIDIA driver directly. Windows’ automatically installed driver can sometimes cause odd behavior even on a fresh setup.
The issue appears to have been fixed by removing the drivers with DDU and reinstalling them. It seems the default driver included with the fresh Windows installation was causing the problem.
