I've been getting frequent DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION (0x133) blue screens since August and can't determine what's causing them. My system has an RTX 4080 Super, 32GB of DDR4-2666 memory, a Gigabyte B760M DS3H AX DDR4 motherboard, an Intel Core i9-13900K, a 2TB Predator GM7000 SSD, and a 1TB SP PCIe Gen 3 M.2 SSD connected through a USB-C adapter. Both SSDs have Windows installed. The crashes continue even when I remove the second SSD. There are also strange detection issues: the primary SSD sometimes doesn't appear in the boot menu until I reconnect the secondary drive, while the secondary SSD won't appear when installed directly in the motherboard and only works through the adapter. My BIOS is currently version F21 from June 19, 2025. Could an updated BIOS, a failing CPU, or one of the SSDs be responsible?

The SSD behavior is a major clue. One or both drives could be defective, or there could be an issue with the motherboard’s M.2 slot, storage configuration, or PCIe compatibility. Test each drive separately, try different M.2 slots if available, and check whether the drives are detected consistently in another computer or enclosure. Also make sure the motherboard firmware and SSD firmware are current. If the blue screens continue with a known-good boot drive and the other SSD disconnected, focus next on memory, motherboard, and CPU stability.
The CPU-degradation explanation is possible in general with a 13900K, but it’s not enough to conclude that the processor is dead. Since you’re already on BIOS F21, the major microcode fix should be present. Update the BIOS carefully, load default settings afterward, and avoid overclocking or motherboard-enhanced power settings while troubleshooting.

The latest version shown for my board is F24. I’m considering updating to that first, but I wanted to make sure it could actually help before doing it.
