I'm trying to compare the PS5 Slim's graphics performance with current NVIDIA and AMD desktop GPUs. Which cards are closest in real-world gaming performance, and how much does console optimization affect the comparison?

In raw compute terms, people often compare it to an RX 6600, but the hardware layout is more similar to a customized RX 6700-series chip. The PS5’s 16 GB of shared memory and fixed hardware configuration make a direct desktop comparison imperfect.

The closest AMD comparison is roughly an RX 6700, though the PS5 uses a custom GPU with different clocks, memory, and feature support. Depending on the game, it can land somewhere between an RX 6600 and RX 6700 XT. On NVIDIA’s side, an RTX 2070 or RTX 3060 is a reasonable ballpark.

For newer cards, an RTX 5050, RTX 4060, or RX 7600 should be in the general range, although results vary by game and resolution. An RX 9060 XT is notably faster and is closer to PS5 Pro-level performance than the standard PS5.

Keep in mind that matching specifications does not always mean matching game performance. Console developers optimize for one fixed GPU and memory setup, while PC games have to support many configurations, so a desktop card with similar raw specs may perform worse in some titles.
