My PC currently has two hard drives: an old 500GB drive containing Windows and a 2TB drive containing my games, photos, projects, and other files. The 500GB drive is failing and Windows frequently tries to repair it during startup, so I want to remove it. I would like to install a fresh copy of Windows on the 2TB drive temporarily, until I can afford an SSD, without losing the data already stored there. I have used MiniTool Partition Wizard before, but I'm unsure whether I can safely create a Windows partition and install the operating system without accidentally formatting the rest of the drive. What would be the safest approach?

Do not assume that an in-place upgrade or the option to keep personal files will solve this. Those choices apply when Windows is already installed on the target installation, not when moving Windows to a different drive or partition. Back up the files, make a Windows installer, and do a controlled clean installation instead. Long term, keep multiple copies of important data using a 3-2-1 backup plan: three copies, on at least two different devices, with one copy stored elsewhere or in the cloud.
This is technically possible, but do not attempt it without a verified backup of the files you care about. The safest route is to copy the data to another physical drive first, then perform a clean Windows installation. During setup, you can create or select a separate partition for Windows, but choosing or formatting the wrong partition can destroy the data, and partition changes are never risk-free. If possible, disconnect the other drives while installing so the boot files cannot accidentally be placed on the wrong disk.
You could shrink the existing 2TB partition to make at least roughly 120GB of unallocated space, then install Windows into that new space. Be extremely careful in the installer: select only the new Windows partition and do not delete or format the partition containing your files. Even then, make a backup first, because a power failure, disk problem, or selection mistake could make the data inaccessible.
I would avoid using the 2TB hard drive for Windows if you can wait. Windows 10 or 11 will feel noticeably slower on an HDD, especially while the same drive is loading games and project files. A basic SSD would be a much better temporary upgrade, and your failing 500GB drive should be replaced as soon as possible.
The main reason I’m considering this is that the 500GB drive is already in poor health and Windows keeps trying to repair it during boot. I’m worried it may fail before I can afford an SSD.
