What CPU upgrade makes sense for CPU-heavy CFD work while keeping gaming performance decent?

I'm upgrading from a Ryzen 5 5600 and use my PC for local, CPU-only multiphysics and CFD simulations, so strong multicore performance is the priority. Gaming is secondary. I'm open to replacing the motherboard and initially considered AMD's Ryzen 7000 or 9000 series, but I realized those platforms require DDR5 memory. What processors would be good choices for this workload? I'd also like to know what makes sense if I want to keep my existing DDR4 RAM.

Moving to Ryzen 7000 or 9000 means buying a new AM5 motherboard and DDR5. For a new AMD build, the Ryzen 9 7950X is a strong 16-core option, and the 9950X is worth considering if the price gap is reasonable. These are generally better fits than gaming-focused X3D chips when your main workload is CPU-based simulation.

Before choosing, check how much memory your simulations need and whether your solver benefits from GPU acceleration. Since you’re using CPU-only multiphysics code, core count, sustained all-core performance, cooling, and memory capacity matter more than gaming features. If your existing board supports it, a Ryzen 9 5950X is probably the most straightforward DDR4 upgrade; otherwise, moving to AM5 gives you a newer platform but adds the cost of DDR5 and a motherboard.

The codebases I use are CPU-only because the multiphysics implementations are complex, so GPU offloading isn’t currently practical for my work.

Intel’s Core Ultra 7 270K Plus can be a good value for multicore productivity while still being capable in games, especially if you find a bundle deal. However, it requires a new platform and DDR5, and the platform’s future upgrade options may be more limited than AMD’s. Compare actual prices and benchmarks for your CFD software rather than assuming one CPU is universally fastest.

Calling it the absolute best multicore CPU would be misleading. It’s a strong mainstream value option, but workstation chips such as Threadripper offer far more cores and substantially higher throughput if the budget and software support them.

For a DDR4 build, Intel’s Core i7-14700K or i9-14900K can provide a substantial multicore increase while allowing you to use DDR4 with the appropriate motherboard. Make sure the board supports the processor and update the BIOS. Also plan for serious cooling and adequate power delivery, since these chips can draw a lot of power under sustained simulation loads.

If you want to keep your current motherboard and DDR4 memory, the simplest upgrade is an AM4 Ryzen 9. The Ryzen 9 5900X gives you 12 cores and 24 threads, while the 5950X has 16 cores and 32 threads and is the stronger choice for heavily threaded simulations. Check motherboard BIOS support and cooling before buying.
