I currently have a Ryzen 9 5900X, 32GB of fast DDR4 memory, and an AM4 system that has been reliable for years. I'm considering upgrading my graphics card to a Radeon RX 9070 XT, but I'm wondering whether the 5900X is old enough to noticeably limit its performance.
I'd prefer not to move to AM5 yet because that would mean replacing the motherboard and DDR4 memory, and my last motherboard replacement was a stressful experience. Ideally, I'd like to keep my current platform and only upgrade the graphics card. If the 5900X is likely to hold the 9070 XT back, would moving to an AM4 X3D processor be worthwhile, or should I replace the CPU, motherboard, and memory with a newer AMD platform?

If you eventually decide to move beyond AM4, remember that newer AMD platforms use DDR5, so your existing DDR4 kit would not carry over. You’d need a new motherboard and memory in addition to the CPU. For now, keeping the 5900X and upgrading only the GPU is a sensible approach; make sure the power supply is appropriate, with roughly 850 watts being a reasonable target depending on its quality and the rest of the system.
I’d install the 9070 XT first and see how it performs with your existing system. If you later find that the processor is limiting minimum or average frame rates, an AM4 X3D chip such as a 5800X3D—or another compatible X3D option—could extend the life of the platform without replacing the motherboard and DDR4 memory.
The 5900X should pair reasonably well with a 9070 XT. You may encounter CPU limits in some games, especially at 1080p, with very high refresh rates, or in CPU-heavy titles, but most games should still run smoothly. At 1440p and especially 4K, the graphics card usually becomes the main limitation.
Whether it bottlenecks depends heavily on the games, resolution, graphics settings, and frame-rate target. Aiming for a steady 60 FPS should be fine in practically everything. Competitive games targeting several hundred FPS can expose the 5900X’s limits, while demanding 4K games with high settings will generally be GPU-limited.

That’s probably the least disruptive upgrade path. There’s no need to replace the entire platform before knowing whether the current CPU actually prevents you from reaching your desired frame rate.
