Which Linux distribution is best for a beginner who wants productivity and gaming?

Try a few options from a live USB, or use an online distro preview, before installing anything. Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, and KDE-based systems are all reasonable candidates. Back up important files, check that your Wi-Fi and graphics hardware are supported, and make sure the installer is using the correct drive and partitions.

For office work, Google Workspace can be used directly in Firefox or Chromium, and alternatives such as LibreOffice or OnlyOffice are available. For games, Steam with Proton supports many Windows titles, but compatibility varies, so check individual games before switching completely. I’d avoid starting with Arch or another highly hands-on distribution until you’re more comfortable with Linux.

Ubuntu is another solid beginner choice, mainly because it has a huge amount of documentation and troubleshooting help available. Mint, Ubuntu, and similar distributions can all handle normal productivity work; the desktop interface and software defaults are the main differences.

If gaming is a major priority, Bazzite is worth considering. It’s designed to be beginner-friendly and works well as a gaming-focused system while still handling regular desktop tasks. The immutable design can feel less flexible than a traditional distribution, though, so Mint may be simpler if productivity comes first.
