Do Windows clients need CALs when using Samba for Active Directory?

If Active Directory-compatible services are hosted on Samba rather than Windows Server, do Windows client machines or users still need Microsoft CALs to connect? The environment has no Windows Server instances, and the question is specifically about Samba providing the directory services to Windows clients.

Think of a CAL as permission to use services hosted by Windows Server, rather than a license attached to every client computer. Using Samba for authentication, DNS, file services, or similar functions avoids Windows Server CALs, assuming those services are genuinely not being provided by a Windows Server.

The important distinction is the server platform, not whether the clients are Windows or whether Samba provides an Active Directory-compatible service. Windows clients connecting to Samba AD do not normally create a CAL obligation. If you later add a Windows Server for services such as file sharing, DHCP, or directory services, that server may introduce its own licensing requirements.

Generally, no. Microsoft CALs apply to accessing services hosted on Windows Server, so if Samba is running on a non-Windows operating system and there are no Windows Server instances involved, Samba itself does not require Windows Server CALs.
