I'm upgrading from an RTX 2080 Ti to an RTX 5070 Ti and want to make sure I connect the power safely. The new card includes an adapter that combines two 8-pin PCIe connectors into a 12V-2x6 connector. My old card used one PCIe cable from the power supply that split into two 6+2-pin connectors at the GPU. Can I plug those two 6+2 connectors into the new card's adapter temporarily, or should I wait until I get a different cable?

The main concern is the PSU and the cable’s capacity, not the age of the graphics card. Check that your power supply meets the 5070 Ti’s recommended wattage and that the cable is an original cable made for that exact PSU. If the PSU has multiple PCIe leads, two separate cables are preferable to a single daisy-chained cable, especially for a high-power card. Never mix modular PSU cables from different units, even if they appear to fit.
The GPU-side 6+2-pin PCIe connectors use a standardized layout, so the included adapter itself is fine. If that existing cable belongs to the same power supply you’re still using, you can connect both of its 6+2-pin plugs to the adapter and use it. Don’t use that cable with a different PSU, though—the connector on the PSU side is not standardized between brands or models.
The adapter won’t be underpowered just because it connects to one PSU-side plug and splits into two GPU-side plugs, provided that cable and PSU are rated for the load. Use the adapter only with the PCIe cable supplied for your current PSU, seat the 12V-2x6 connector fully, and avoid sharply bending it right at the connector.
So I should only replace the cable if I’m changing power supplies, rather than because the graphics card is newer?
