I'm noticing a small reddish light or glow near the front camera area of my iPhone 11 and Chromebook, and I may be seeing something similar on my television. The lights sometimes stop when I try to show them to my girlfriend, which is making me worried that the devices are recording me. What could these lights be, and how can I safely check whether the devices are using their cameras or sensors?

Look up the exact model manuals and check the device privacy settings rather than throwing anything away. You can temporarily cover built-in webcams with a removable webcam cover or tape, but don’t cover vents or sensors that the device needs. A trusted repair shop can inspect the phone or Chromebook if you still can’t identify the light.
A faint red or purple glow can come from infrared sensors used for face detection, proximity sensing, or night vision. Infrared isn’t always visible, and it doesn’t automatically mean the camera is recording. On an iPhone, active camera use normally produces a green privacy indicator, while microphone use shows orange. Check the privacy indicators and review which apps have camera permission before resetting anything.
A TV can also have a small status light or an infrared receiver for the remote. That light may blink when it receives a signal, and it usually has nothing to do with recording.
