Should I Upgrade My CPU Platform or Build a New PC for 4K OLED Gaming?

My Core i9-9900K recently failed, and I haven't kept up with PC hardware since building the system. The only major upgrade I've made was replacing the graphics card with an RTX 3080 Ti. It handled my 1440p 165Hz monitor well, although the older CPU may have limited its performance.

I recently bought a 4K 240Hz OLED monitor, and my system struggles in 4K with noticeable stuttering. I was also running only 16GB of DDR4 memory, so that may be contributing to the problem.

Should I replace the motherboard, CPU, and RAM while keeping the RTX 3080 Ti, or would it make more sense to build an entirely new PC? My original budget is around $2,500. If I spend that much on a new system, I'd ideally like an RTX 5080, but pairing one with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D seems to push the budget closer to $2,700–$3,000. I'm in Seattle and don't have convenient access to discounted in-store component bundles.

I'm also hesitant about AMD graphics cards because I'm not very confident troubleshooting driver or software issues if something goes wrong. Would a new prebuilt be worth the extra cost, or would a DIY upgrade be better? Are major seasonal sales likely to make a meaningful difference?

The 9900K is definitely old enough that moving to a modern CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory would be a noticeable improvement. Your RTX 3080 Ti can still be useful, but 4K gaming—especially with ray tracing—can overwhelm it. I’d start with a platform upgrade and 32GB of RAM rather than immediately replacing the whole computer. Prebuilts usually save you the assembly work but often cut costs on the motherboard, power supply, cooling, or memory.

For 4K, the GPU generally matters more than the CPU once you’re using a reasonably modern processor. A faster CPU will help with stutters and minimum frame rates, but it won’t transform the 3080 Ti into a 4K/240Hz card. In demanding games, you’ll likely need upscaling, frame generation, reduced settings, or a newer GPU to get close to that monitor’s refresh rate. AMD graphics cards can be perfectly usable, but if you value NVIDIA’s ray tracing, DLSS, and familiar software, staying with NVIDIA is a reasonable preference.

Don’t overlook the 16GB of RAM. Modern games can easily use more than that, and running out of memory can cause stuttering even when the average frame rate looks acceptable. Move to 32GB of DDR5, use a current AM5 motherboard and CPU, and make sure your power supply and cooling are adequate. Also consider a clean Windows installation after changing platforms so old chipset and graphics drivers don’t create additional problems.

A $2,500 budget is going to be very tight for both an RTX 5080 and a high-end gaming CPU. The graphics card alone can consume most of that budget, so you would have to compromise elsewhere. A sensible DIY build with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and RTX 5080 may land closer to $2,800–$3,000 before considering Windows, storage, cooling, and other parts. If you keep the 3080 Ti, you can put that money toward a strong AM5 platform now and upgrade the GPU later.
