I found a refurbished Corsair HX1500i power supply and am considering buying it. Is a refurbished unit safe, and would you recommend it over purchasing a new PSU?

Also make sure you actually need 1500 watts. Many systems use far less, so a quality new PSU with an appropriate capacity may be a better value than a refurbished HX1500i. If you’re building an extremely high-end system and can afford those components, saving a little on a used or refurbished power supply may not be worth the risk.

The word “refurbished” can mean anything from an opened-and-returned box to a unit that was repaired. Check who performed the refurbishment, the seller’s reputation, the return policy, and the remaining warranty. A longer manufacturer-backed warranty is a good sign, but I’d avoid an unknown seller with little or no coverage.

I’d only seriously consider it if Corsair itself is selling or certifying the refurbished unit. When it comes directly from the manufacturer, you have a better chance of knowing it was properly inspected and you should have meaningful warranty coverage. A third-party seller is much harder to evaluate.

Power supplies aren’t a great place to cut corners. Even if the listing claims the unit is refurbished, you may not know what was tested or replaced. If the price difference is manageable, buying new with a full warranty is the safer choice.
