I'm upgrading from a 1080p 144Hz monitor and want to choose the right connection for my MSI RTX 3080 LHR. The card has three DisplayPort 1.4a outputs and one HDMI 2.1 port. I'm considering a 1440p 240Hz monitor if I find a good deal, or otherwise a 1440p 144Hz model. Which resolution and refresh rate make the most sense, and should I prioritize DisplayPort or HDMI 2.1? I may eventually use two monitors, but I'm only buying one for now.

DisplayPort is a solid default for a PC monitor, especially if you are looking at 1440p around 144Hz. For 1440p 240Hz, check the monitor’s specifications carefully because some models support the full refresh rate only through HDMI 2.1, while others use DisplayPort with DSC. The RTX 3080 can drive either setup, but the achievable frame rate still depends heavily on your CPU, the games you play, and your graphics settings. A 1440p 144Hz or 165Hz monitor is generally the more practical upgrade from 1080p 144Hz unless you mainly play competitive games and can consistently produce very high frame rates.
For 1440p at 240Hz, both DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 can work, although DisplayPort may rely on DSC depending on the monitor. HDMI 2.1 generally has more bandwidth and can often run that combination without DSC. In practice, the best choice is usually whichever connection the monitor supports properly and whichever cable is included. For a second monitor later, either connection should be fine. One minor issue is that some systems may give a DisplayPort-connected screen priority during startup, so BIOS might appear on a different display than Windows labels as the primary monitor, but that is easy to work around.
