I'm building a new family PC, and both options cost exactly the same. They would use the same RTX 5070 Ti and case. The two CPU and platform choices are: 1) Ryzen 7 7800X3D with an MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi motherboard and 32GB of DDR5-6400 CL36; or 2) Intel 270K Plus with an Asus Z890 motherboard and the same 32GB of DDR5-6400 CL36. The main use will probably be gaming, but I also want the system to handle general family use, experimentation, learning, and possibly more demanding productivity tasks. I usually keep a computer for seven to ten years, and my current system dates from 2017. I've only owned Intel systems before, so I'm wondering whether AMD is suitable for more than gaming and whether the Intel system would be more future-proof. Which option makes more sense?

If you expect to do video production, rendering, compiling, heavy multitasking, or other sustained workloads, the Intel processor is the better choice. Its extra cores can provide roughly twice the multithreaded performance of the 7800X3D in some tasks. For browsing, office work, media, light editing, and occasional experiments, though, the 7800X3D will feel perfectly capable. AMD processors are not limited to gaming.
The 7800X3D is not a gaming-only processor. It’s still a capable modern 8-core, 16-thread CPU and handles normal multitasking and productivity very well. The Intel chip is considerably stronger for heavily threaded workloads because of its additional cores, but the 7800X3D is more than enough for most family-PC tasks. AM5 also offers a better potential upgrade path, while the Z890 platform is unlikely to receive many meaningful future CPU upgrades.
Since you usually replace the entire PC every seven to ten years, the AM5 upgrade path may not matter much. It’s still a nice option, but it probably shouldn’t be the deciding factor by itself.
I’d reconsider the memory choice for the AMD build. DDR5-6400 can work, but Ryzen 7000 systems commonly perform best around DDR5-6000 with tight timings, such as CL30. Faster memory can force the memory controller and Infinity Fabric into a less efficient divider, which may cancel out the small benefit of the higher RAM speed. DDR5-6000 CL30 is usually the safer target for a 7800X3D.
For gaming, the difference is fairly small with these processors. The AMD chip may deliver higher average frame rates, while the Intel system can sometimes produce stronger 1% lows. With a 5070 Ti, especially at 1440p or 4K, the GPU will usually matter more than the CPU. I wouldn’t choose based on a tiny benchmark difference unless you specifically play CPU-limited games at high refresh rates.
If the prices are genuinely identical and there’s no specific application that benefits from Intel’s extra cores or integrated graphics, I’d choose the AMD system. It should be excellent for gaming and normal family use, while leaving open the possibility of a later AM5 CPU upgrade. Choose Intel instead if heavy productivity work is an important part of the plan or you know you’ll benefit from its stronger multicore performance.

I use AMD systems for professional work as well, and general-purpose software runs normally on them. The main distinction is that the X3D models prioritize gaming performance rather than being bad at productivity.
