Why is NVIDIA still better at hardware video encoding than AMD?

I'm planning a Jellyfin or Plex server and trying to understand the hardware choices. AMD Ryzen CPUs often outperform Intel CPUs in general workloads, but NVIDIA still seems to have a stronger reputation for GPU-based video encoding and transcoding. Can someone explain in simple terms why AMD hasn't caught up in this area, and whether Intel Quick Sync might actually be the better choice for a media server?

NVIDIA’s advantage is also about more than the silicon. It has spent years improving drivers, SDKs, application support, and compatibility with media-server software. The company also developed or acquired important video technologies and kept improving them, while AMD put less sustained investment into this particular part of its product stack. That’s why NVIDIA can remain ahead even when AMD is competitive in other GPU areas.

The best choice depends on what you need. If you only expect a few streams, a recent Intel CPU with Quick Sync is usually efficient and inexpensive. If you need lots of concurrent transcodes or specialized support, NVIDIA is a safer plug-and-play option. AMD can still work, especially if open-source drivers and Linux compatibility are priorities, but it isn’t automatically the strongest choice for transcoding.

For a media server, Intel Quick Sync is often the best value. Modern Intel integrated graphics can handle several simultaneous 4K transcodes while using very little power, especially if your clients usually direct-play the video. A powerful Ryzen CPU isn’t automatically better for this job, because dedicated media engines can do the work much more efficiently than CPU software encoding.

The short version is that NVIDIA invested heavily in dedicated video-encoding hardware and the software around it much earlier than AMD. Their encoder has been refined across several generations, and application support is generally very mature. AMD’s hardware isn’t necessarily unusable, but its encoder quality, driver support, and compatibility have historically been less consistent.
