Why is my RTX 3080 Ti running at PCIe 4.0 x8 instead of x16?

I'm having trouble getting my RTX 3080 Ti to negotiate a PCIe 4.0 x16 link. My system uses a Gigabyte Z690 UD DDR4, Core i7-12700K, 32 GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4-3200, an RTX 3080 Ti, and a 1 TB WD Black SN850 NVMe drive. The card is installed in the top PCIe slot closest to the CPU.

I've already reseated the GPU and CPU, inspected the socket for bent pins, cleaned the contacts and PCIe slot, cleared CMOS, tested with and without the NVMe drive, and repeated those steps several times. I also tested the GPU in another motherboard, where it ran at PCIe 3.0 x16, and tested a GTX 1660 Super in this board, where it also ran at PCIe 3.0 x16. BIOS, GPU-Z, and HWiNFO all report that the current board is negotiating PCIe 4.0 x8, and one test even showed x4.

I'm not using a riser cable, and the card is definitely in the primary slot. I've also tried clean graphics-driver installation. Could this be caused by a BIOS setting, PCIe bifurcation, CPU socket contact, or lane sharing with the M.2 drive?

Someone else had a similar behavior with a Gigabyte Z690 board and a 30-series card. The card stayed at PCIe 4.0 x8 regardless of BIOS version, but benchmark results were still normal. That doesn’t prove your board is fine, especially since you mentioned below-average scores, but it suggests this can be a board or firmware quirk rather than a defective GPU. If the card performs normally after testing under load, I wouldn’t replace the motherboard solely because the link reports x8.

First confirm whether this is only a reporting issue or an actual performance problem. Run a graphics benchmark and compare the result with other 3080 Ti systems. PCIe 4.0 x8 provides roughly the same bandwidth as PCIe 3.0 x16, and many games show little to no measurable difference between PCIe 4.0 x8 and x16. The link may also drop to a lower width when the GPU is idle, so check the value while a rendering test is running.

Check the motherboard manual’s lane diagram carefully. The M2A_CPU slot is connected directly to the CPU and may share CPU PCIe lanes with the main graphics slot, while the other M.2 slots use chipset lanes. Move the SN850 to one of the chipset-connected M.2 slots, then clear CMOS and check the link again. Removing the drive entirely is also a useful test, but make sure the slot you test is actually the one involved in lane sharing.

Update to a stable BIOS version along with the Intel chipset and motherboard drivers. Then check the BIOS PCIe settings and set the primary slot to Gen 4 rather than Auto. Make sure bifurcation is disabled or configured for a single x16 device; don’t select an x8/x8 split unless you specifically need it. If the board still reports x8 with every M.2 drive removed, CPU socket contact or a motherboard fault becomes more likely.
