My HP OmniBook 3 has been stuck for more than an hour and a half on the message, "Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart. 0% complete." The screen is mostly black, but the fan is still running, and the power button does not seem to respond. The battery was probably around 30–55% charged. I had also been playing a demanding game with large storage requirements. How can I safely shut it down and check whether anything was damaged?

Once you can shut it down and restart it, run the built-in HP hardware diagnostics. Power the laptop on and repeatedly tap Escape until the Startup Menu appears, then press F2 for System Diagnostics. Start with the storage test and memory test. If either reports an error, the drive or RAM may need attention. For a deeper memory check, you can also create a bootable USB drive with Memtest86+ and let it run several passes.
Press and hold the power button continuously until the laptop fully powers off. Since it has been stuck at 0% for over an hour, a forced shutdown is appropriate. After waiting a little while, turn it back on and check whether Windows starts normally.
Thanks, I’ll try holding the power button down.

Thank you—I’ll run the storage and memory tests if it starts up again.
