I'm considering switching to a lightweight Linux distribution for my ASUS X540BA laptop from 2018. It has an AMD A9-9425 dual-core processor (up to 3.7 GHz), 8 GB of DDR4 RAM, a 480 GB SSD, and an integrated AMD Radeon R5 graphics card. I've heard suggestions like LXQt or XFCE for the desktop environment, but I'm still uncertain if my laptop can handle these options or if it's too outdated. What do you think?

Honestly, your CPU is on the lower end of the spectrum, similar to those old Intel Celerons. I'd recommend going with XFCE since it's a bit more polished, even if it's slightly heavier than LXQt.
Why not just go with LXQt instead? It's lightweight and could suit your needs well.
