Should I Keep the 9070 XT and X3D CPU or Downgrade for 32GB of RAM?

I'm putting together a roughly $1,300 AM5 gaming PC for 1440p gaming and light browsing on Linux. I already picked up a Radeon 9070 XT and a Ryzen 7500X3D bundle, but rising memory prices have made it difficult to fit 32GB of DDR5 into the budget. Moving from 16GB to a 32GB kit would cost at least another $250.

Would it make more sense to downgrade the CPU and GPU so I can afford 32GB, or should I keep the stronger gaming hardware and upgrade the memory later? I used 16GB of DDR4 for years on Windows without major problems, although I'm wondering whether newer games might benefit more from 32GB. Could a large swap file reasonably cover the difference, or would relying on virtual memory hurt performance?

I'm also considering an Intel Core Ultra 5 250K bundle because the CPU and motherboard are nearly free when buying 32GB of DDR5, but I prefer the AM5 platform and an mATX build. Finally, would switching from DDR5-6000 CL36 to DDR5-6000 CL30 make a noticeable difference, particularly to 1% lows on an X3D processor? I'd rather avoid selling my current memory unless the improvement is meaningful. Is it reasonable to wait for memory prices to fall, or should I make the change now?

DDR5-6000 CL30 is preferable, but the difference from DDR5-6000 CL36 is small in real gaming, especially with an X3D chip. It might improve a benchmark or slightly change 1% lows, but it won’t justify downgrading your GPU or CPU. Capacity and having a stable dual-channel configuration matter more than tightening CAS latency.

If you can afford it at current prices, 32GB is more comfortable, especially if you multitask or play heavily modded or poorly optimized games. But 16GB isn’t automatically unusable. Monitor memory usage while gaming; if it reaches nearly 100% or you see stutters and crashes, then capacity has become the real bottleneck. A swap file is useful as a safety net, not a replacement for adequate physical RAM, since storage is dramatically slower.

Before spending anything, check actual RAM usage with your usual games and background apps. Since Linux generally has less overhead for this use case, 16GB may be adequate for now unless you’re running lots of programs, mods, or browser tabs. Waiting is also defensible if the system is currently performing well; memory prices may change, but there’s no guarantee of a quick correction.

I’d keep the stronger CPU and GPU, then buy a new 32GB kit later rather than mixing memory. You can sell the current 16GB module afterward or keep it as a spare. Adding a matching second module might work, but mixing kits can create stability problems, particularly on AM5.
