How can I switch instantly between a Mac and Linux PC on one 4K 240Hz monitor?

I use a Mac for apps such as Pixelmator Pro and a Linux PC for most of my other work. Both are connected to one 4K 240Hz monitor, and I want to move between them with virtually no delay while keeping the full resolution and refresh rate. Remote desktop introduces too much bandwidth and latency, while the KVM switches I tried caused the monitor to go black for several seconds during input changes. My current inexpensive KVM switches the keyboard and mouse instantly, but not the video signal. A Linux virtual machine on macOS is also not ideal because macOS still shows through in places such as global shortcuts and the menu bar. Is there another setup that can provide near-instant switching, or am I better off keeping two monitors?

The main limitation is the display signal itself. When you change inputs, the monitor usually has to renegotiate the connection, so some blackout or delay is unavoidable with ordinary input switching. A high-end KVM with EDID emulation may reduce this considerably by keeping the monitor’s identification data stable, but it probably cannot guarantee truly instant switching at 4K and 240Hz. Check that any KVM explicitly supports EDID emulation and your required bandwidth.

If your monitor supports picture-by-picture or a dual-input mode, try keeping both computers connected and active at the same time. The monitor can then display one source or the other without completely dropping and reacquiring the signal. You may need to use software such as Synergy to share the keyboard and mouse, though this may involve a split-screen arrangement or some compromises.

Using two inputs on the monitor and assigning a keyboard shortcut to change the active source might be worth testing, but the monitor may still blank briefly when switching. At 4K and 240Hz, truly seamless single-screen switching is difficult because of the bandwidth and link negotiation. If the available KVMs and monitor modes are not good enough, keeping the displays close together is likely the only zero-compromise option.
