I chose "Update and shut down" before going to bed, and the update appeared to complete until the computer became stuck on the Dell logo. After waiting about five minutes, I forced it off. When I powered it on again, it tried to install the same update and froze at the same point, so I shut it down again. The motherboard has a steady orange light, which is different from what I normally see. Everything had been working normally before this, and I'm worried that repeatedly forcing it off may have caused a Windows or BIOS problem. What should I try to fix it?

Avoid repeatedly powering it off while the update is active. If recovery options don’t work, boot from Windows installation or recovery media and repair the installation. Back up important files as soon as you regain access, and consider Dell’s built-in hardware diagnostics to rule out a drive or memory problem.
If it still hangs after waiting, try entering the Windows recovery environment by interrupting startup a few times, then choose Troubleshoot and use Startup Repair or uninstall the latest quality update. If Windows eventually starts, let it finish repairing before trying another shutdown. The steady orange motherboard light isn’t enough by itself to prove the BIOS has failed; check the Dell diagnostic indicators or manual for what that light means on your exact model.
The update may simply need more time, especially if it’s working on system files in the background. Start it again and leave it at the Dell logo for at least 20–30 minutes before interrupting it. Repeated forced shutdowns during an update can damage Windows or leave the update incomplete.

I’ll leave it running much longer next time instead of assuming it has frozen.
