I need to migrate two personal Gmail accounts into Microsoft 365. One contains under 500 MB of mail, while the other is around 15 GB. I'd prefer to preserve Gmail labels, ideally by mapping them to folders in the Microsoft 365 mailbox. Google Takeout followed by converting MBOX to PST is one option, but I'm looking for a simpler or more reliable alternative. Paid migration services are fine, although a free method would be even better.

If you use IMAP, review Gmail’s label settings first. Gmail’s All Mail label can expose another copy of nearly every message, and messages with multiple labels may appear in multiple destination folders. Hiding All Mail from IMAP and staging the migration in smaller batches can prevent the Microsoft 365 mailbox from filling unexpectedly. Also watch for folder or message-count limits when moving a large label.
A practical free approach is to use classic Outlook with Gmail connected through IMAP, then export or copy the mail into the Microsoft 365 mailbox. Check the folder and label mapping carefully before starting the 15 GB account.
Thunderbird can import the Gmail MBOX data into local folders, where the labels are easier to preserve. You can then connect the Microsoft 365 account through IMAP and drag the local folders into the matching destination folders. It’s mostly a manual process, but it gives you good control over how labels become folders.
Microsoft has a native IMAP migration option that may be worth investigating, though support for personal Gmail accounts and label preservation can vary. It may transfer the mail successfully, but don’t assume Gmail labels will automatically become neatly organized Microsoft 365 folders.
For a personal Gmail account, IMAP is generally available without the old enable/disable switch, so the main work is configuring the folders and avoiding duplicate copies from All Mail.
