I recently bought a Lenovo V14 G2 with 16 GB of RAM and a 500 GB SSD for about $200, mainly so I could start learning Linux and explore the IT field. I installed Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop, and the experience has been smooth and beginner-friendly so far. I've also started using terminal cheat sheets to learn basic commands. I'd like to customize the desktop with more interesting widgets, themes, fonts, colors, icons, and possibly animated or GIF-style elements. Cinnamon's built-in options seem somewhat limited, so where should I begin? Are there reliable sites, tools, or tutorials for finding desktop themes and extensions, changing application colors and fonts, or creating a more heavily customized setup?

The easiest way to learn is to find customization tutorials and experiment gradually. Downloadable themes and extensions can get you most of the way, while more advanced setups often involve editing configuration files for panels, launchers, terminals, fonts, colors, and system monitors. Make backups of your configuration files so you can undo changes if something breaks.
A lot of the highly customized screenshots use a different desktop environment or a window manager rather than Cinnamon. Look closely at the setup you’re trying to copy and identify whether it uses something like KDE Plasma, Hyprland, or another tiling compositor. The desktop environment makes a big difference in which widgets, themes, and configuration tools are available.
For Cinnamon-specific themes, applets, desklets, and extensions, start with the official Cinnamon Spices site. It has downloadable customization options that integrate directly with the desktop. You can also check your desktop settings for themes, icons, fonts, and panel configuration before moving on to more advanced tweaks.
I’m starting to notice that many of the interface widgets and setups I like seem to be built around Hyprland, so I’ll look into how that works.
