I'm putting together my first gaming PC with a Ryzen 5 7600 and an RTX 5070, but I'm unsure which memory option makes the most sense for my budget. I can currently afford one 16GB DDR5-6000 stick, though I could potentially buy a cheaper 2×8GB DDR5-5600 kit now. I could also buy a single 16GB DDR5-5600 module. Is dual-channel memory at 5600 noticeably better than one faster 6000 stick, and what would be the best upgrade path if I eventually want 32GB?

Look at the complete kit rather than only the frequency. Check the price, timings, EXPO support, and the memory chips if that information is available. Hynix-based DDR5 kits are often a good choice for Ryzen, but a reputable 5600 kit is perfectly usable. Avoid mixing random sticks or using four modules unless you’re prepared to troubleshoot stability.
A single 16GB stick will run in single-channel mode, so it is generally not the best choice for gaming. If you buy one stick now, choose a common, reputable 16GB model with an identical replacement available later. Still, buying a matched pair from the start avoids compatibility and timing headaches.
If the choice is strictly between these two, I’d lean toward the 2×8GB kit because dual-channel memory can make a more noticeable difference than the small speed increase from 5600 to 6000. Just remember that 16GB total may become limiting sooner, and replacing the kit later with 2×16GB is usually preferable to adding mismatched modules.

That makes sense. My concern is that upgrading to 2×16GB later could be expensive, but I’ll compare the prices before deciding.
