I worked in a school cafeteria and was fired after a student reported that their lost AirPods were showing up near or with mine. The student lost theirs yesterday, and the next day the dean and a school resource officer confiscated my AirPods and accused me of theft. I have had this pair since around February, several months before the student's loss. I originally found them at a previous job, asked about them for months, and was eventually allowed by my manager to keep them. They are standard AirPods linked to an Android phone, and I do not have the original receipt. Is it possible for Find My to misidentify a case or earbuds, and what evidence could help show that these were mine?

Find My can show a nearby device or location, but a ping by itself does not establish who owns the AirPods or when they were acquired. Preserve screenshots, messages, work records, and the names of anyone who knew you had the AirPods months ago. Also write down exactly how and when your former manager authorized you to keep them, since that history may matter.
Because you say the AirPods came from your old workplace, focus on documenting the permission you received rather than assuming this will automatically be resolved by a receipt. Contact the former manager or witnesses if appropriate, and avoid making detailed statements to investigators without first getting advice from a local criminal-defense or employment attorney. Florida’s at-will employment rules do not prevent a theft allegation from being challenged, but they can limit what remedies are available for the firing.
Check the serial number printed inside the charging-case lid and compare it with any records you can find, such as purchase documentation, an old device backup, repair record, packaging, or photos. Find My is useful evidence, but a matching serial number is much stronger. Ask for the student’s alleged serial number and make sure the claim is based on the actual hardware, not just a nearby Bluetooth or location signal.
I was using an Android phone, so I cannot check the serial number through iPhone settings. The serial number should still be printed inside the case, though, and I am looking for any older records or photos that might identify it.
