I use a 240Hz 1440p monitor, but I rarely get close to its full refresh rate. I mainly play racing and simulation games such as BeamNG and Assetto Corsa, along with various shooters, and I would also like to get into VR gaming.
I have been considering a new AM5 build with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, a good B850 or possibly X870 motherboard, 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 memory, a newer NVMe drive if that would make a meaningful difference, and a Radeon RX 9070 XT. I would reuse my power supply, fans, and existing storage unless replacing them would be worthwhile.
Bluetooth has also been unreliable on my current system despite extensive troubleshooting, including a clean Windows installation. A temporary fix is unplugging the computer and holding the power button, but Bluetooth eventually stops working again. I can use a wired Xbox controller, so this issue alone is not necessarily enough to justify replacing the system.
I am willing to spend around $2,000 or more, but I want a worthwhile performance improvement rather than paying a large premium for a small gain. I would like the new system to last at least five years and handle upcoming modern games while making better use of my 1440p 240Hz display. Would upgrading to AM5 be worthwhile, or should I start with a graphics card upgrade? I will also be visiting a Micro Center in Boston and wonder whether a CPU, motherboard, and memory bundle would be worth bringing home.

A complete AM5 system would definitely be a substantial upgrade, but expect the total cost to land around $2,000–$2,500 with a high-end CPU and graphics card. The 9800X3D makes sense for simulation games and high-refresh gaming, while 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 is a sensible memory choice. You do not necessarily need a new NVMe drive if your current one is healthy; storage upgrades usually will not transform game performance. Your 850W power supply may also be reusable if it is a good-quality, modern unit and has the required graphics-card connectors.
Waiting for a future processor generation is an option if you are not in a hurry, since newer CPUs may offer better performance. However, launch timing and real-world gains are uncertain, and waiting is only worthwhile if you are comfortable delaying the upgrade. If you do buy while visiting Micro Center, a CPU, motherboard, and memory bundle can be a good way to reduce the platform cost, provided the specific parts meet your needs.
Before replacing the whole platform, it may be worth trying the standard software fixes one more time: update the BIOS, remove old drivers, and perform a clean Windows installation. You would probably want a fresh install with a new motherboard anyway if you reuse the boot drive. That said, since you already tried a clean install and the Bluetooth problem keeps returning, a cheap PCIe Wi-Fi/Bluetooth adapter could solve that issue without requiring a new build.
The biggest limitation for higher settings and frame rates is probably the RTX 3070. A 9070 XT should provide most of the performance improvement, while the 9800X3D would provide the rest, especially in CPU-heavy simulation games and at very high refresh rates. If you want to spend gradually, start with the graphics card; you can carry it into a complete AM5 build later.
I tested a borrowed RTX 5070 and only saw roughly a 15–30% improvement in many of the games I play. It seemed like the 5800X was limiting the card in some situations, which is why I am considering replacing both components.
