My computer repeatedly shows USB storage devices appearing and disappearing, even when nothing is plugged into the USB ports. It happens intermittently rather than constantly. If disconnecting the front-panel module doesn’t help, check the motherboard’s USB controller and drivers next. A damaged port, loose internal connection, or controller issue could make Windows repeatedly detect and lose a device. Inspect the USB headers for bent pins or debris before reconnecting anything.
Since the problem continues with all external devices unplugged, the front-panel USB adapter is a strong suspect. Shut the PC down, disconnect that adapter’s internal USB header from the motherboard, and start the computer again. If the phantom drive notifications stop, the adapter, its cable, or the motherboard header may be damaged or shorting.
