Which CPU and motherboard should I choose for a £4,000 gaming and streaming PC?

I'm building my first PC and have a budget of around £4,000, with some flexibility if the upgrade is worthwhile. The main uses will be gaming and streaming, and I want something that should remain capable for several years without overspending unnecessarily. I'm considering AMD Ryzen versus Intel and would also appreciate motherboard recommendations for whichever platform makes the most sense. A white or stylish build would be nice, but performance matters more than appearance.

For a gaming-focused system, I’d lean toward AMD. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a strong choice when gaming performance is the priority, while a Ryzen 7 9700X is a sensible step down. If you’ll do heavier productivity work alongside streaming, a Ryzen 9 9900X could make more sense because of its extra cores. Pair the CPU with a good B850 or X870 motherboard that has the features you actually need, rather than paying extra just for premium branding.

AMD would be my pick here because the X3D chips are particularly strong for gaming, and modern graphics cards handle most of the streaming workload through hardware encoding. A high-end Radeon card such as an RX 9070 XT could work well, although it’s worth comparing its price and streaming features with competing cards before buying. You probably don’t need to spend the entire budget on the tower; putting some of the remaining money toward a good OLED monitor could make a bigger difference to the overall setup.

If streaming quality and software compatibility are especially important, compare the available hardware encoders rather than choosing a GPU based only on gaming FPS. Either way, use a dedicated hardware encoder so streaming has minimal impact on game performance.
