I'm a college student, and the campus network blocks peer-to-peer traffic and VPN connections. A game I play relies on P2P networking for multiplayer, so I haven't been able to connect. I tried Proton VPN without success, and I also have a Tailscale account for accessing my NAS remotely, although I don't know whether it would help here. What legitimate options should I ask about or try without violating the school's network policies?

A VPN or self-hosted tunnel might technically change how traffic appears, but setting one up specifically to bypass the college’s restrictions isn’t something I’d recommend. Ask the game’s support team whether it supports a relay or non-P2P multiplayer mode, and ask campus IT whether they can suggest an approved solution.
Tailscale is mainly for connecting devices you control; it isn’t a reliable way to make a blocked game work, and using it to evade campus controls may still violate the rules. If IT can’t provide an approved option, playing over a personal home or mobile connection, or using an off-campus gaming setup, is the safer alternative.
The safest option is to contact campus IT and explain which game and connection type you need. They may have a gaming or esports network, a guest network, or specific ports they can allow. If the traffic is intentionally blocked, trying to disguise or tunnel it could violate the acceptable-use agreement and get your account restricted.

That makes sense. I’ll check whether the school has a gaming network or can confirm exactly what the game requires.
