My USB microphone recently stopped working, and I haven't been able to get any other microphone setup working since. I've tried connecting headsets through the PC's 3.5mm audio ports, using Bluetooth, and even plugging a headset into a PS5 controller. The computer is a custom-built iBUYPOWER PC, and the headset I'm currently trying is a Razer Barracuda X. It has separate audio and microphone ports on the PC, and I've already tried adapters, but Windows still doesn't detect the mic. What should I check?

In Windows, open Settings > System > Sound and select the correct input device manually. Check the input level meter while speaking, then review Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone to ensure microphone access is enabled for the system and apps. If no device appears at all, reinstall or update the motherboard’s audio driver from the PC or motherboard manufacturer.
The Barracuda X normally uses a combined 3.5mm TRRS plug when connected by cable, so a desktop with separate headphone and microphone jacks needs a proper CTIA TRRS-to-dual-TRS splitter. Make sure the microphone branch is plugged into the pink mic jack, not the headphone output. Also test the rear motherboard ports instead of the case’s front-panel ports, since the front audio wiring or jack can be faulty.
Bluetooth headsets and a microphone connected through a PS5 controller are not always exposed to Windows as usable microphone inputs, especially when the controller is connected wirelessly. Test with the Barracuda X’s included wireless USB receiver or a known-good USB headset first. If USB works but the analog jack does not, the problem is probably the splitter, jack wiring, or motherboard audio hardware rather than the microphone itself.
I’ll test the rear ports and check that the splitter is the correct CTIA type. I may have been using an adapter that only separates the audio incorrectly.
