I installed a new Patriot P410 1TB Gen4 NVMe SSD, but it does not appear in the BIOS or in the operating system. When I move it into the slot currently used by my Windows boot SSD, the computer repeatedly restarts with a blank screen. What should I check to determine whether the drive, M.2 slot, or system configuration is the problem?

Formatting won’t help if the SSD isn’t visible in the BIOS—formatting only happens after the motherboard detects the drive. First, shut the PC down completely, unplug it, remove and reseat the SSD, and make sure the retaining screw isn’t bending it. Check that the M.2 slot supports NVMe drives rather than only SATA M.2 drives, and review your motherboard manual because some slots share lanes with SATA ports or may be disabled depending on the CPU. Try the SSD in another compatible slot, reset the BIOS to default settings, and update the BIOS if needed. If it still causes restarts and never appears in BIOS, the drive may be faulty or incompatible with the system. Test it in another computer or with a known-good NVMe enclosure/adapter if possible.

If the drive eventually appears in BIOS or Windows Disk Management, then it can be initialized and formatted there. But until it shows up at the firmware level, focus on seating, slot compatibility, BIOS settings, and whether the SSD itself is defective.
