I'm looking for a Linux distribution with gaming-focused optimizations and a SteamOS-style gaming mode, similar to Bazzite. However, I want it to boot to the login screen instead of automatically entering gaming mode, so my KDE desktop remains protected by a password. Is there a distro that supports this setup, or can it be configured after installation?

PikaOS is another gaming-focused distribution worth checking out. It may provide the gaming optimizations you want while still allowing you to use a regular KDE desktop and login manager.
CachyOS could be a good fit. It uses KDE by default, is tuned for performance, and includes gaming-oriented options. You should be able to configure the system to boot into the normal login screen while still launching a gaming interface when you choose.
My CachyOS installation had a problem where it only detected one CPU core. Debian worked immediately for me, so hardware compatibility may be worth testing before committing.
CachyOS also has a mobile-style mode, so it offers some flexibility depending on how you want to use the machine.
