Even if employees are not actively watched, employers often reserve the right to review activity when needed. Connecting personal storage or opening family media can also introduce malware or create data-protection concerns on the company network. The practical rule is simple: use work equipment only for work, and use personal devices for personal files, accounts, videos, and games.

There usually is not a reliable way for an ordinary user to determine exactly what an employer monitors. Security software, network equipment, device management tools, and workplace policies can all provide different levels of visibility, and trying to bypass them could create an even bigger problem. Use a phone or another personal device for private tasks, or wait until you can buy a laptop. Company equipment should be treated as monitored and company-owned, regardless of whether monitoring is obvious.

Avoid using the work computer for personal activities, even if your files are on an external drive. The computer can still record the applications you open, websites you visit, files you access, and devices you connect. Personal accounts, saved passwords, family photos, and other data could also remain in browser history, backups, or system logs. Keeping personal and work devices separate protects both your privacy and your job.

The safest assumption is that anything done on a company computer or network could be logged or reviewed. That does not mean someone is watching every minute, but IT may be able to see browsing history, network activity, login times, connected devices, and other usage details. If there is an investigation or performance issue, those records can be examined. Check the company’s acceptable-use policy if you have access to it, but do not treat the absence of obvious monitoring as proof that personal use is private.
