Should I buy 2×8GB or 1×16GB of DDR4 RAM?

I'm putting together a second PC that has only two RAM slots. Should I buy a matched 2×8GB DDR4 kit now and use 16GB in dual-channel mode, or buy a single 16GB stick and wait for prices to drop before adding another stick later?

Go with 2×8GB. A matched pair lets the motherboard use dual-channel memory, providing noticeably more bandwidth than a single 16GB stick. The difference is especially noticeable in gaming, integrated graphics, rendering, and heavy multitasking.

If you already know you need 32GB soon, it would be better to buy a matched 2×16GB kit when affordable rather than planning to add a random second 16GB stick later. Otherwise, 2×8GB is the sensible option for a 16GB system. For DDR4, look for something around 3200–3600 MT/s with reasonable latency, such as CL16 or CL18.

The dual-channel recommendation is mainly about memory bandwidth. DDR5 has two 32-bit subchannels per module, but that does not change the usual advice for DDR4: two matched sticks generally perform better than one.

Buying one 16GB stick now can be risky. A second stick with the same model may be unavailable later, and mixing different kits can sometimes cause compatibility or stability problems. If you only need 16GB today, 2×8GB is the safer performance choice.
