Can I Recover From a Weak First Year and Continue in Computer Science?

I'm about to start my second year of Computer Science, but I neglected much of my first year and failed some courses. My programming fundamentals are also weaker than they should be, and I'm feeling lost and guilty because my family made significant financial sacrifices to support my education. I've realized that I made mistakes and genuinely want to continue in this field. Is it still realistic to pursue an IT or computing career, and what should I focus on first to rebuild my foundation and keep up with future courses?

You can recover, but there isn’t a shortcut. Go back through your first-year notes, assignments, textbooks, and recorded lessons, then identify the topics you actually don’t understand. Start from the beginning if necessary and work through small exercises until the basics become comfortable. The important part is consistently doing the work instead of feeling overwhelmed by the entire subject at once.

I’ll go back through my first-year materials and make a list of the areas I need to review. Thanks for the encouragement.

When you get stuck, ask specific questions about the exact concept, line of code, or exercise that is confusing you. Before that, try to explain what you think should happen and where your understanding breaks down. Sometimes the problem is an incorrect assumption about how a programming concept works, so be willing to examine and replace those assumptions. Focus first on fundamentals such as variables, control flow, functions, data structures, debugging, and basic problem-solving.

I’ll try to be more precise about what I don’t understand and pay attention to assumptions I may have picked up incorrectly. I appreciate the advice.

Use every resource available to you, including your school’s material and free tutorials, documentation, and practice problems. Learning independently is a major part of computer science, both during university and afterward, so building that habit now will help you long term. Set a realistic weekly schedule, practice regularly, and ask instructors or classmates for help when you get stuck.

That makes sense. I need to take responsibility and build a consistent study routine instead of expecting a quick fix.
