I'm using a Ryzen 5 3600 and want to upgrade my graphics card. What is the most powerful GPU I can reasonably use without the CPU causing a major bottleneck? I'm looking for general gaming guidance, but I understand the answer may depend on the games, resolution, graphics settings, and target frame rate.

If you want to use a higher-end GPU such as an RTX 3080, upgrading the CPU to a Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X first is a good idea. The 5600 is a relatively inexpensive drop-in upgrade on compatible motherboards and gives the graphics card more room to perform.
An RTX 3060 Ti is a sensible match for this processor. You could use something faster, but in CPU-heavy games or when aiming for very high frame rates at 1080p, the Ryzen 5 3600 may hold the card back.
There isn’t one universal maximum because bottlenecks depend heavily on the game, resolution, settings, and refresh rate. At 1440p or higher, the Ryzen 5 3600 can work well with cards around the RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 2070 Super, or RX 6700 XT, especially in visually demanding single-player games.

That makes sense. I’ll check whether my motherboard supports a Ryzen 5 5600 before deciding on the graphics card.
