I recently started considering a PC upgrade as a birthday splurge, but I'm new to choosing computer parts and need to keep the budget reasonable. My current system has an ASRock A320M/ac motherboard, a Ryzen 3 3100, 32 GB of RAM, a 224 GB SSD, a 1 TB hard drive, and an AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT with 12 GB of VRAM. I mainly use it for gaming and digital art. Newer games run around medium to low settings, which is playable, but I'd like to improve performance without spending as much as a completely new system. What upgrade would give me the best value?

A Ryzen 5000 CPU would be the most sensible upgrade while keeping your current motherboard and RAM. A Ryzen 5 5600 is a strong budget choice, while a 5700X3D or another X3D model could be worthwhile if you find one at a good price and want the system to last longer. The A320 board should work with compatible Ryzen 5000 chips after a BIOS update, but verify support first. A larger SSD would also make a big day-to-day difference; hard drives are fine for storage, but games load much more smoothly from an SSD.
I’d start with the CPU and leave everything else alone for now. Look at the Ryzen 5 5600 or 5700, and consider a 5700X3D if you find a particularly good deal. Sales can make Ryzen 5000 chips much cheaper, so it may be worth waiting for one. Your graphics card is already capable of high settings at 1080p in many games, but the Ryzen 3 may prevent it from reaching its full potential. A larger SSD is the next upgrade I’d make, especially for your game library and art software.
The Ryzen 3 3100 is probably the main limitation, especially paired with an RX 7700 XT. A Ryzen 5 5600 is usually an affordable drop-in upgrade for this platform and should provide a noticeable improvement. Check your motherboard’s CPU support list and update the BIOS before removing the old processor. I’d also consider replacing the small 224 GB SSD, since it will fill up quickly with modern games.

The motherboard itself should be fine for this kind of upgrade. Just update the BIOS while the Ryzen 3 is still installed, then install the newer processor.
