I'm a .NET developer who also has some experience with Java, but I recently lost my job and I'm unsure which technology to prioritize. Are there significantly more Java opportunities than .NET roles, or are both still viable choices?

Don’t choose based only on the total number of jobs. A technology with more listings may also have far more candidates competing for those roles. Look at the kind of backend or industry work you actually want and see which stack appears most often. If the results are fairly even, either option can work, and your fundamentals, problem-solving ability, and experience may matter more than the language itself. Java and C# are similar enough that a strong .NET developer with some Java exposure can usually transition fairly quickly.
The answer depends heavily on your location and the industries around you. Search for Java and .NET positions in your area and compare the number of openings, the required experience, and the types of companies hiring. The local job market should guide your decision more than overall global statistics.
Apply to both kinds of roles instead of limiting yourself too early. .NET experience can transfer well to Java backend work because many concepts and development practices are similar. You may need to learn the specific frameworks and tooling used by the employer, but your existing backend experience should still be valuable.

Exactly—check current listings near you. Whichever stack has more relevant roles is probably the better short-term focus.
