Should I buy the RX 9070 XT now for 1080p gaming or wait for AMD’s next cards?

I'm planning to upgrade from an RX 6600 to an RX 9070 XT, and I'm willing to spend around $800 if it makes sense. I'm not interested in switching to NVIDIA; I mainly want to know whether AMD is likely to release something soon that would make the 9070 XT a poor purchase. I'll be playing at 1080p and 144 Hz, including games such as Forza Horizon 6. Is it worth buying now, or should I wait?

If you genuinely want the 9070 XT and have already accepted the price, buying now is reasonable. Even if AMD announces another generation later, the card should still deliver excellent 1080p performance and remain useful for 1440p. The main reason to wait would be avoiding overkill or choosing a cheaper card, not fear that the XT will suddenly become unusable.

There are rumors about AMD’s next architecture, but nothing officially confirmed or close enough to plan around. If you already need the card, the 9070 XT should remain a strong high-end option for quite a while. Hardware prices have also been rising, so waiting may not necessarily save money.

At 1080p, performance may be limited by your CPU before the 9070 XT reaches its full potential. The exact result depends on the game, settings, and target frame rate, but pairing a very powerful GPU with an older processor can leave performance on the table. If you plan to stay at 1080p, check your CPU before committing to the XT model.

A 1080p bottleneck isn’t automatic. Competitive games may be CPU-limited, while demanding visual settings can still push the GPU. It depends on the specific game and how the system is configured.

For 1080p at 144 Hz, the 9070 XT is considerably more powerful than you need. A 9060 XT 16GB, 9070 GRE, or possibly a used previous-generation card would likely be enough, depending on the games and settings. You could also put the savings toward a 1440p monitor, where the 9070 XT would be a better-balanced choice.
