Why Are All My Games Suddenly Dropping to 10 FPS?

I'm using a budget gaming laptop with an RTX 3050, 16GB of RAM, and a 12th-generation Intel Core i5-12450H. It has handled games like League of Legends without trouble before, but now every game experiences sudden drops to around 10 FPS about every 20 seconds. Lowering the graphics settings doesn't help. The laptop is always plugged in, drivers and software are up to date, and the fans and internal components were recently cleaned. What could be causing these recurring performance drops?

Check temperatures and clock speeds while the stutter happens, rather than judging by how warm the outside feels. Use something like Task Manager, HWiNFO, or MSI Afterburner to watch CPU/GPU temperature, usage, and frequency. A failing fan, loose heatsink, or aging thermal paste can trigger repeated thermal or power-limit throttling even if the case doesn’t feel hot.

The vents and internal parts were cleaned recently, and the laptop feels unusually cool, but I haven’t monitored the temperatures and clock speeds during a drop yet.

Make sure the laptop is actually using its plugged-in performance profile. Even with the charger connected, Windows or the manufacturer’s control software can switch to a battery-saving mode and heavily throttle the CPU or GPU. Check Windows power settings and the laptop utility, then confirm the game is using the RTX 3050 rather than integrated graphics.

The charger is always connected, but I’ll check whether the system somehow switched to a quiet or battery-saving profile.

Restarting can occasionally clear a driver or power-management problem, but since you’ve already restarted and the issue affects every game, I’d also clean-install the graphics driver and check Event Viewer for hardware or driver errors. It’s worth verifying that the RAM is running in dual-channel mode too, although 16GB itself should be enough for these games.

I’ve already restarted and installed updates, but I’ll check the RAM configuration and try reinstalling the graphics driver.

Since the drops happen at regular intervals and graphics settings don’t change them, check for a background process causing periodic spikes. Task Manager can show CPU, disk, memory, and GPU usage while the game is running. Cloud sync, antivirus scans, update services, overlays, and recording software are common causes. Try disabling unnecessary startup apps and overlays temporarily.
