What Linux Distribution Works Well on a 2017 Intel MacBook?

I recently got a 2017 MacBook and have had trouble updating it beyond macOS Mojave. I've used Linux since around 2019 and normally run Ubuntu on my main computer, so I'm considering installing Linux on this laptop to try something different. I'm mainly interested in web browsing away from my desk, but I'd also like enough performance for lightweight games such as Terraria. I've heard about distributions like elementary OS and Asahi Linux, though I'm not sure which would be appropriate for this hardware. Since this is my first Apple computer, I'd appreciate advice about distro compatibility, Wi-Fi drivers, installation steps, and any hardware limitations I should know about.

Ubuntu and Mint generally work well with the Broadcom Wi-Fi hardware found in many Macs. During installation, enable the option to install third-party proprietary software; that usually adds the required firmware and drivers. Checking your exact model and Wi-Fi chip beforehand is still a good idea.

I installed Linux Mint on a 2017 MacBook Air and the hardware worked without any major setup. Mint may be a comfortable choice if you want something familiar and lightweight for browsing, with enough compatibility for games like Terraria.

A 2017 MacBook uses an Intel processor, so you can install a standard x86-64 distribution such as Ubuntu or Linux Mint. Asahi Linux is intended for Apple Silicon systems, which started appearing in MacBooks around 2020, so it isn’t necessary for your model. It’s still worth searching for an installation guide specific to your exact MacBook model before starting.
