How can I improve a weak 5G router signal through dense forest?

My home internet comes from an indoor 5G router, but the nearest cell tower is about 500 meters away through dense forest. The router reports a signal around -100 dBm, and I'm hoping to improve connection quality and reduce ping for my PC. I've already tried band locking. Is there equipment or an installation approach that could help strengthen the cellular connection?

If your router has antenna ports or an Ethernet WAN port, consider an outdoor cellular modem/router or a directional outdoor antenna connected to the existing setup. Putting the cellular equipment or antenna on a mast or other elevated location can help, but long coax cables can introduce losses.

It may be worth getting advice from an installer who knows which bands and towers your provider uses. Outdoor equipment and installation can cost several times more than a normal home router.

Before buying anything, check the signal outside at different heights and locations around the property. If the signal is extremely weak everywhere, an amplifier cannot create a usable signal; relocating the router or using a properly aimed outdoor antenna may be more effective. A different provider or satellite service could also be worth comparing if the local cellular coverage is inadequate.

You can look into an external cellular antenna or a cellular signal booster. An antenna mounted outside and as high as possible may work better than an indoor router, especially if it has a clear direction toward the tower. Make sure the antenna and booster support your carrier’s 4G/5G bands; generic equipment isn’t guaranteed to help.

The 5G router is my home Wi-Fi setup, so I’m specifically trying to improve the cellular signal reaching the router and get better ping on my PC.
