Should I downgrade my GPU to add more RAM for video editing?

I currently have a Ryzen 7500X3D, an ASRock B850M-C motherboard, 16GB of CL36 DDR5-6000 memory, and an RTX 3070 Ti. I mainly play at 1080p and 144Hz, but I've recently started editing more than 15 hours of multi-angle footage in DaVinci Resolve because I want to build a YouTube channel as a source of income. The problem is that 16GB of RAM and 8GB of VRAM are becoming major limitations. Money is tight, so I'm considering selling the 3070 Ti and buying a cheaper RTX 3060 or an AMD card, then using the savings to add another 16GB memory module. However, that would be a GPU downgrade, and I would lose features I use, including Nvidia's encoding tools, CUDA, and OptiX for occasional Blender work. Would it make more sense to keep the GPU and save for upgrades, or is moving to a cheaper card and increasing RAM the better choice?

I wouldn’t downgrade the graphics card just to fund the RAM upgrade. A weaker GPU could make your editing and Blender work worse, especially since you already rely on CUDA, OptiX, and Nvidia’s encoder. The immediate problem sounds like system memory, so try to prioritize getting another 16GB module while keeping the 3070 Ti. If you eventually need more CPU performance, you could consider moving from the six-core chip to a used 12-core processor, but RAM is likely the bigger bottleneck right now.

That’s what I’m leaning toward—the 16GB of RAM seems to be the main thing choking the system.

If upgrading right now would put you in a bad financial position, it may be better to wait and save rather than replace one component with a clear downgrade. Your current GPU still has useful Nvidia features, and buying a cheaper card may only solve part of the problem while creating new limitations. Add memory when you can, then upgrade the GPU once you can afford a meaningful step up instead of a sideways move.

I expect my editing projects to become more demanding, so waiting is frustrating, especially with current hardware prices, but I also don’t want to make an upgrade that leaves me worse off.

Keep an eye out for a good deal on a used or discounted card with more VRAM, such as an RTX 3090 or 4070-class model. Depending on the software benchmarks, newer options like Intel’s Battlemage cards could also be worth checking because their media engines may work well for encoding. For the short term, though, increasing your system RAM is probably the most cost-effective fix. Your X3D processor is relatively forgiving of slower or higher-latency memory, so adding a matching 16GB module shouldn’t hurt performance much.
