I'm putting together a new desktop with a budget of about $1,000. I already own several SSDs and an MSI RX 6600 XT, so I plan to reuse that graphics card for now and upgrade it later. My current parts list includes a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE, MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi motherboard, one 16GB DDR5-5200 CL40 memory module, an Okinos Air Cross case, and an 850W Montech Century II power supply. The total is roughly $1,075. I'll receive another RAM stick as a gift later, but I'm wondering whether this is a sensible allocation of money or if I should choose a cheaper CPU and motherboard and put more toward other components.

The memory choice is the biggest problem. A single 16GB stick runs in single-channel mode, which reduces bandwidth and can noticeably hurt performance. Also, waiting for a second module that may not match perfectly can create compatibility issues. I’d buy a matched 2x16GB kit now, preferably DDR5-6000 with reasonably tight timings such as CL30, rather than buying one expensive module and adding a potentially mismatched stick later.
The 9800X3D is an extremely powerful gaming CPU, but it’s heavily mismatched with an RX 6600 XT. Since the graphics card will limit gaming performance in most situations, a less expensive Ryzen 5 7600 or similar processor could provide a much better-balanced build and leave money available for a future GPU upgrade. You can keep the 9800X3D if you plan to replace the graphics card soon, but it isn’t the best value with your current card.
You could build a better-balanced system around a Ryzen 5 7600, 32GB of DDR5 in two modules, and an affordable B650 motherboard. Depending on local prices, the savings could go toward a substantially faster graphics card, such as an RX 6800, RX 7800 XT, or another current midrange option. That would improve gaming performance much more than moving from a midrange CPU to the 9800X3D while keeping the RX 6600 XT.
The existing graphics card can still be reused, but I’d avoid spending over $200 on a premium motherboard and flagship gaming CPU unless the GPU upgrade is planned fairly soon.

The RX 6600 XT is the card I already have, so I’m planning to use it temporarily and upgrade it later.
