I'm new to choosing graphics cards and am deciding between the basic entry-level Radeon RX 5700 8GB models from XFX and MSI. I understand that XFX focuses mainly on AMD cards, while MSI makes graphics cards for both AMD and Nvidia. Is one brand generally better for this GPU, or should I compare the specific cooler, noise levels, warranty, condition, and price instead?

I’ve used XFX AMD cards for years without problems, so I wouldn’t avoid the brand. Several people have also had reliable MSI cards. For a used RX 5700, the card’s actual condition, operating temperatures, fan noise, and price are probably more important than the logo.
I’d be comfortable buying either one. XFX has a strong reputation with AMD cards, while MSI can also make solid models. If the cards are otherwise comparable, choose the cheaper one or the model with the better cooling and warranty.
I’d lean slightly toward MSI for these entry-level options because some XFX budget cards use more plastic and may have less effective cooling. That said, this isn’t true of every XFX model, and a higher-tier XFX design can be better than a cheaper MSI one.
The exact model matters more than the brand name. Both companies have good and less impressive designs, so compare reviews for the specific RX 5700 versions. Pay attention to temperatures, fan noise, cooler quality, and warranty rather than assuming one brand is always better.

That difference usually comes down to the individual model. Lower-cost versions may cut back on materials and cooling, while premium models from the same brand can be much better built.
