Can You Become a Software Engineer Through Self-Study Without a CS Degree?

I have a non-technical degree and cannot attend college or earn a formal computer science degree. Is it realistic to become a software engineer through self-study today? Would following a structured curriculum such as OSSU or Teach Yourself Computer Science provide enough foundational knowledge and practical skill? What should I do to become employable, especially given the current entry-level job market?

Yes, it’s absolutely possible. A degree isn’t a legal requirement, and many engineers entered the field with unrelated degrees or no degree at all. The difficult part is getting the first interview. Self-study can teach you the fundamentals, but you’ll also need strong projects, practical experience, and the ability to explain your technical decisions clearly.

The market is especially difficult for junior developers right now. Degree holders may also have internships, referrals, and project experience, so you’ll need another way to stand out. Networking, referrals, smaller companies, and software teams at non-tech businesses can be more approachable than large technology companies. Some automated application systems may filter out candidates without degrees, which makes personal connections particularly valuable.
