Which Programming Language Is Best for a Career in Healthcare Technology?

I'm a pharmacy technician in Canada starting a BSc in Computer Science, and I'd like to build skills that could be useful in healthcare. As the field becomes more technology-focused, I'm interested in creating small tools to make pharmacy work more efficient, developing inventory or drug-distribution models, and possibly moving into bioinformatics later on.

My degree lets me choose an introductory course in Java, Python, or C++. Since I'm coming from an English degree and a pharmacy technician diploma rather than a strong programming background, I'm not sure which option would give me the best foundation. Which language would you recommend for healthcare-related research, automation, data analysis, optimization, or bioinformatics?

Java is worth considering if the introductory course has especially strong teaching and support. It can be more demanding than Python, which may help you build a deeper foundation with guidance from instructors. Python is relatively easy to study independently later, so choosing Java could be a reasonable strategy if you want to use the structured course for the tougher language.

That’s a good point. The quality of the course and support may matter just as much as the language itself.

I’d start with Python. It’s beginner-friendly and lines up well with automation, data analysis, research, and bioinformatics. You can accomplish useful tasks without needing as much code as you would in some other languages.

Java is a solid choice for larger applications and can provide a good foundation for object-oriented programming. C++ is valuable when performance and low-level control are important, but it tends to make simple tasks more complicated for a beginner. For your particular interests, Python is the most practical starting point.

That comparison makes the choice much clearer. I appreciate it!

Python is probably the best fit for the goals you described. It’s widely used in bioinformatics, data analysis, machine learning, and research, with libraries such as Biopython, pandas, and scikit-learn. It’s also convenient for small workplace automation projects, like processing spreadsheet exports, reconciling inventory counts, or flagging items that need attention.

For inventory and distribution problems, Python has tools such as PuLP, OR-Tools, and SciPy, even when the underlying optimization software is written in a faster language. SQL would also be extremely useful to learn alongside Python, since healthcare systems commonly store information in relational databases.

That’s incredibly helpful, especially the examples of how Python could apply to pharmacy work. Thank you!
