I'm building a gaming PC and am undecided between the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and Ryzen 7 9800X3D for the CPU. For the graphics card, I'm considering an overclocked RTX 5070 or an overclocked RX 9070 XT. I'll mainly play at 1440p with a 210 Hz monitor, but I may upgrade to 4K in a few years. I can spend roughly €100 more on the CPU if the upgrade is worthwhile. Which combination offers the best balance of performance, value, and future-proofing?

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is usually the better-value gaming CPU. The 9800X3D is faster and newer, but the difference is often modest, especially when you’re playing at 1440p or 4K where the GPU becomes the limiting component. If the price gap is only around €50–€80 and you want the newest AM5 gaming chip, the 9800X3D is reasonable, but it isn’t necessary for a 9070 XT build.
A 7800X3D paired with the RX 9070 XT is probably the best cost-to-performance combination here. The 9800X3D is useful if you’re chasing very high frame rates at 1080p or 1440p, but at 4K the difference between the CPUs will matter much less. Spending the savings on a better monitor, larger SSD, or cooling may provide more practical value.
Make sure you compare the RTX 5070 with the RX 9070 XT directly; the 9070 XT is closer to the RTX 5070 Ti in performance than to the regular 5070. Check current prices and benchmarks for the games you play, since ray tracing, upscaling, and driver preferences can change the result. For conventional gaming at 1440p and eventual 4K, the 9070 XT’s extra VRAM is a useful advantage.
For this price range, the RX 9070 XT is the stronger choice over the RTX 5070. It generally offers more raw performance, 16 GB of VRAM instead of 12 GB, and better value. The RTX 5070 only makes more sense if it is significantly cheaper or you specifically need Nvidia features such as CUDA, certain AI workloads, or a strong preference for DLSS.
I’m mostly gaming, so I probably wouldn’t need CUDA. I’ll keep the 9070 XT as the main option.

So the 9800X3D would be more of a luxury upgrade than a major performance jump for this setup?
