Is an i5-14600K a worthwhile upgrade from a 12100F?

I'm considering a CPU upgrade for around €250. My current system has an Intel i3-12100F, an XFX RX 6800 XT, 24GB of DDR4 memory, and an ASRock B660M Pro RS motherboard. I'm mainly looking at second-hand options and was considering an i5-14600K or 14600KF, along with a new CPU cooler. I could always move to a Z-series motherboard later if I decide to overclock or undervolt.

Would the 14600K be excessive for this system, or would a 12th- or 13th-generation processor make more sense? Some options I've found are a €100 i5-12500, a €180 i5-12600KF, a €130 i5-13400F, and a new i5-13600K for €210. The i5-14600K is available used for €200 from a private seller, while the 12600KF is from a retailer.

For cooling, would a Thermalright Peerless Assassin or similar tower cooler be sufficient for normal gaming, or would I need an AIO liquid cooler?

A good dual-tower air cooler should be plenty for these i5 processors during regular gaming, so an AIO shouldn’t be necessary. The i5-12600KF is still a strong value and performs roughly in the same general class as newer midrange chips such as the i5-14400F. Any of the listed CPUs would be a noticeable upgrade if you’re actually CPU-limited, but I’d be cautious with used 13th- and 14th-generation processors because of the known reliability and degradation concerns. Also check that your motherboard BIOS supports whichever chip you choose.

Would the new i5-13600K at €210 be a better buy than the retailer-supplied 12600KF at €180?
